Galerie Kandlhofer, Vienna
A new installation titled ‘Jazz Window’, a continuation of my rendering of security fences in the ephemeral form of printed film curtains, subverting the idea of barbed wire fences as symbols of control, borders and division. The imagery, including depictions modern black musical traditions, features heavily an outdoor go-go concert in my native Washington DC, a feel-good bounce heavy genre of music also native to the city. With everything that’s been going on in DC since the summer, with immigration crackdowns, people disappearing, and an illegal military occupation, and soldiers sweeping the ghetto, I wanted to document an instance of the resilience of the spirit of my people an our city in a trying time. The curtain is activated by a fan, that allows it to float in unison with a new sound installation of my original saxophone composition mixed my original percussion production. This show and residency realizes some of my favorite works to date, my best sound, my best painting, and more.
